Remembering Rick Hurst, Beloved Character Actor and ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ Favorite

June 26, 2025 — Rick Hurst, the veteran character actor best known to generations of television fans as the lovable Deputy Cletus Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard, has passed away. He was 79.

Born on January 1, 1946, in Houston, Texas, Richard Douglas Hurst began his acting career in the late 1960s. He quickly established himself as a versatile performer in both comedy and drama, appearing in classic television shows such as Sanford and Son, The Partridge Family, Gunsmoke, Maude, and MASH. His expressive face, gentle Southern charm, and impeccable comedic timing made him a favorite among casting directors and fans alike.

But it was his role as the bumbling but good-hearted Deputy Cletus Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard that earned him lasting fame. Originally appearing as a guest character, Cletus became a recurring role and ultimately the show’s deputy sheriff. Hurst brought warmth and depth to the role, turning what could have been a throwaway part into one of Hazzard County’s most endearing characters. He later reprised the role in the reunion films and fan conventions, embracing the character’s legacy with gratitude and humor.

Outside of Dukes, Hurst’s film credits included The Cat from Outer Space (1978), Steel Magnolias (1989), and Ernest Goes to Jail (1990). He also made memorable guest appearances on The Love Boat, Laverne & Shirley, WKRP in Cincinnati, and The Golden Girls.

In addition to his acting work, Hurst was deeply connected to his fans. He frequently attended Dukes of Hazzard events and remained close with his former castmates, delighting in the show’s enduring popularity. He was also known for his down-to-earth personality and dry wit off-screen, as well as being a loving father to actor Ryan Hurst of “Sons of Anarchy” fame.

Rick Hurst’s passing leaves a hole in the heart of classic TV fans and the Dukes community. His talent, humor, and kindness made him a cherished presence on and off the screen.

Rick Hurst (1946–2025) — forever our Deputy Cletus.
