In Memoriam: George Wendt (1948–2025)

Today, we mourn the loss of George Wendt, the beloved actor best known for his role as Norm Peterson on the iconic sitcom Cheers. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on May 20, 2025, at the age of 76.

Born on October 17, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, Wendt began his comedic career at The Second City theater, where he met his wife, Bernadette Birkett. They had three children together. Wendt’s portrayal of Norm, the affable bar regular who made everyone feel at home, endeared him to audiences and earned him six consecutive Emmy nominations. He appeared in all 275 episodes of Cheers from 1982 to 1993.

Beyond Cheers, Wendt showcased his versatility with roles in films like Fletch, Forever Young, and House, as well as memorable guest appearances on shows such as Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, and Seinfeld. He also graced the stage in acclaimed Broadway productions including Hairspray, Elf, and Art.

Wendt’s warmth, everyman charm, and sharp comedic timing left an indelible mark on both his peers and generations of fans. He is survived by his wife Bernadette, their three children, and his nephew, actor Jason Sudeikis.
